The Kind of Poor

The Kind of Poor
What kind of poor am I meant to help?
The orphan trying to work his way through school?
The street bum reeking of alcohol?
The little girl with her blind mother standing at the intersection?
How about the guy with a track record of criminal activity?
The proverbial prodigal son who blew all his cash?
The guy sitting on the same corner wearing the same clothes, the money he collects daily seemingly getting him nowhere?
Who of these is worthy of my help? What kind of poor am I meant to give to? How am I supposed to know if the money he is using isn’t just funding his habit? How will I know if my witholding is keeping him from his next meal? Do I have to know? Must people ‘qualify’ for my compassion? If so, who does?
