Disturbing Grace

There are certain people

That you may think do not deserve grace,

Kindness. Nor mercy.

And chances are they don’t,

As you don’t.

The grace of God isn’t waiting for an opportunity

For us to prove we deserve it

Because we never will.

We just need it.

Our very existence as children of God

Depends on grace.

There is no room for self-righteousness.

While this applies to all of life

I just want to highlight that

I believe that the lens of grace is needed to  help the church

Grapple with our racist, xenophobic and homophobic tendencies.

So the next time we imagine some people are too far out for grace

It helps to remember that we never qualified either.

‘O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity’

-Jonah 4:2
