Starting fresh on old ground

There’s only so many lessons you can learn from the student’s chair,

Quietly listening to instruction from the teacher,

Passively receiving insights

Drinking in their wisdom

Sitting at their feet.

But then there come’s a day when your seat is taken in the classroom,

And the people you counted on are now counting on you

To show up.

Your mistakes are your mistakes

And your victories are hard earned,

Your opinion is necessary,

Your input needed.

We may not always be ready for when that day comes

But we should be ready to try,

To do more than just follow the script

But to start writing the story ourselves.

Today is the beginning of a new adventure for me;

Adulting.

In real time.

A fresh start on a road travelled by many before

So many mentors, so much advice

But today the chalk is in my hand.
