What can we say?
The struggle was real.
But God was good.

Like any year we started out with high hopes and great expectations,
We sometimes found our feet on the paths we dreamed of
And other times we could not recognize our own shoe size.
Some of us were humbled severely,
Having had our fill of humble pie in years gone by
We were surprised to see life had more on the menu.
Some found love and were not disappointed;
There is nothing better than knowing and being known.

We lost too many this year. Even just one can be more than we can bear.
We thought our own hearts would stop. But the tears never did.
We have learned to live with loss.

We took leaps of faith
And asked ourselves why we don’t take them more often,
We also shrunk back in fear
And asked ourselves where our courage went.
We graduated college
And discovered that adulthood really is only meant for grown ups.
We tasted the cheap yet potent wine of bureaucracy
That left us intoxicated with frustration.
We realized that rebellion has its place in systems of oppression
And that it does not pay to bury your head in the sand.
We became freedom fighters in a supposedly free generation.
We felt the pain, but bit our lips.
We cried ourselves to sleep and later found shoulders to cry on.

We lost the faith
But were found by grace
We fell on our faces
But were picked up by mercy.

December seems to arrive sooner and sooner each year.
Maybe we really are getting old.

What can we say?
The struggle was real.
But God was good.

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

-Jesus, John 16:33
