Means and Ends

What is the goal of religion?
Is it not fellowship with God?
The prayers, the scriptures, the fellowship
Are channels towards where we hope to go
But they are not the destination themselves.
We do not pray for prayer’s sake
Or sing on Sunday morning
Because that’s what we’ve always done.
We do all this in pursuit of Someone Great.
How foolish to get caught up with the love letter
And cram the words to every love song
And yet miss the Lover Himself.

Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.
-Isaiah 29:13
