Day one

We sat down and dreamed
About what this new decade would be like.
We projected and analyzed
Having several assumptions based
On what previous years had afforded us.
But after a year like 2020,
When so many things we had taken for granted
Were upended in a matter of days,
When we now sit down and think of the year ahead,
The benefits of hindsight are not as apparent.
Was last year an outlier?
Or should we expect more of the same?
There is no way of knowing for certain
What booby traps or treasure troves
Lie ahead.
And maybe that was the lesson of 2020;
To tread softly on the confident plans we make.
Therefore, chart your path with all the ambition you can muster
But don’t stomp the ground as though you were One who made it.
For we have been reminded that
Despite all our progress as a species
Much of life remains unpredictable

And can only be lived one day at a time.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

-James 4:13-17
