Specificity is expensive.
Risky even
Clearly stating what you are going after
And taking a leap of faith to plunge into it
Puts you on the spot,
For you and everyone else to see
Just how you’re actually doing.
And so, in defence,
Its tempting to call yourself a generalist
Someone who paints with broad strokes
Happy with whatever you get
Showing up whenever you can.
Though casting a wide net
Will mean you will often be busy
With something
It is not a useful strategy for finding
Your greatest contribution.
Its true that not every path leads
To a pot of gold
But you definitely won’t find any
If you don’t commit to a path
A method
An insight
Something you can sink your teeth into
Deeply.
Broad strokes have their place
But there’s more in you than that.
