Headlines up close

Most of us will never make the news.
Whether for disaster or delight
The news remains something
On the other side of town,
One step removed.
But when a virus we first saw on TV
Eighteen months ago
Made its way into our neighborhoods
Into our households
And then all the way into our lungs,
Those once distant headlines
Loomed large,
Large enough to reveal
That humanity is far more amorphous
Than geographical borders
Lead us to believe,
And that while headlines may often seem
Far away and far removed,
They form part of a global reality
That we may not always have
The luxury to ignore.
