Outsourcing Sanity

How can we know who we are

Unless we are shown?

Humanity did not evolve

And cannot persist in a vacuum.

In the absence of other humans

What would we be?

No infant would survive

With no breast to feed it,

No language would be learned

Without others to speak to,

No reality contextualised

With no community to draw from.

As adults we often imagine ourselves

As self-determining individuals

But we are not even possible

Without others.

In this age of isolation

When we encounter more pixelated faces on screens

Than bare faces in person,

Where we have more phone calls

Than real hugs

Our very sanity is under stress,

And our bodies ache for

What our hearts deep down know to be true;

That it is impossible to be fully human

Alone.
