Mourning my Younger Self

When life was simpler
And I did not have to choose
Between my conscience
And my security
When I didn’t see the hypocrisy
Of the people I admired
Nor painfully grapple with
The same double standards
Within myself.
I mourn my younger self-
When anyone next to me
Could be my friend,
When temptations weren’t so
Devastating,
When the stakes weren’t so high,
Coming to know that the true cost of
Growing up
Isn’t paying taxes and
Complicated relationships
But seeing more clearly for myself
What God thought we would
Be better without:
The knowledge of good and evil.

Happy birthday to me.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Genesis 2:15-17
