Future Happiness

University at eighteen
Straight As but with a social life
Dream job straight outta school
Married by thirty
First home within a year of that
Holidays in distant places
Friends in high places
Perfect kids
The best schools
Early retirement-
Fill in the blanks
With your recipe for your
Future happiness.
The future is elusive by nature
And it’s hard enough to perfectly predict the weather
Let alone future bliss.
The older I get
The more I realize
That my future happiness
Is not predicated on the kind of stuff
I acquire along the way,
Nor the milestones I achieve
Right on schedule
And not even the people
I have in my life,
But rather my future happiness
Weighs heavily on the kind of person
I become along the way.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
And lean not on your own understanding
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3v5-6
