Generosity

Is a free choice.
And since the choice
Is free
It can be made at any point.
It is not reserved
For those that have excess
Or who have a track record
Of selflessness,
Not only for chronic do-gooders
With bleeding-heart charity,
It is not a function reserved for
Philanthropists
Nor for people with
‘Nice life problems.’
More than money,
Generosity is a choice.
A posture of heart
An open handed perspective
A decision to contribute
To include
To care
To part with a part of ourselves
To pull out an extra chair
For one more.
We are not generous
Because we have a lot.
We are generous
Because life has required it
Because we know what its like
For doors to be opened for us
And that, no matter our lot
We will always have something
To offer.

As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.  “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
Luke 21:1-4
