Staying for the right reasons

It is not wise
Nor is it sustainable
To endure difficult things
Out of guilt,
Or obligation.
Life is complicated,
Confusing at times
Convoluted.
It’s one thing to want to be somewhere
Because its the best you’ve encountered
And have no real reason to complain,
Quite another when you are
Agonizing,
Suffering to do the right thing.
Jesus sweated blood
When faced with the prospect
Of what it would take
To love us to the end.
Gethsemane shows us
That the will of God
Is not always pleasant.
Yet we are called to more
Than to grin and bear it
Not just to suffer in silence.
But rather,
Like Christ,
We are to endure because
Cosmic ecstasy has been promised-
There is future joy on the way
A kind of harmony
That will sweeten our bitter aftertase
Straighten every crooked path
Strengthen every weakened knee
Undo every undoing.
If you are struggling,
Wrestling,
Wanting to leave
But knowing that its best
That you stay-
Don’t stay out of guilt
Or obligation,
Or some feat of stoicism.
No.
Stay because you’ve
Had a glimpse of what is to come,
And are gradually
Being convinced
That ultimate joy
And satisfaction
Is on the way.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
-Hebrews 12:1-2

  1. Wow! This is such an amazing read, full of depth and exhortation. Thank you for reminding that there is power in staying; ending until the end. Let us run this race with endurance. Amen.
