One day at a time

Life is lived
On life’s terms-
Not ours.
We often hope that the coming of the new year
Dramatically changes certain things in our lives:
As if when the clock strikes twelve
We will find ourselves on a steady path
Towards radical transformation.
Life is lived
Day to day
And the people we become
Along the way
Matters far more than the shores we seek to reach.
Real growth and change
Happen daily-
Sunrise to sunrise.
Its a trap to get wrapped up
In the days gone by
And a snare to make sweeping
About what is to come,
Hoping that our circumstamces change
As fast as our timelines do.
Has this pandemic not taught us anything?
Life is lived a day a time
Regardless of how grand
Or gloomy
Our projections are.
Who we choose to be
Moment to moment
Adds up,
And while we will
Make our plans
And lay out our resolutions,
Life itself will not
Hurry along
Nor slow down
On our account.
Life will not be tamed-
Only lived.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;  whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.  Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”  But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

James 4:13-16
