Humans have a great great capacity
For imagining a version of the world
Dictated by our preferences
As though we were the ones who made it
In seven days.
God has mercy on those He wants to have mercy,
Whether or not we agree with His assessment
And He plays on a field far, far above
We are not Christians because we just wanted to be
Or because we thrust ourselves upward
Making our own crooked paths straight-
We are here by sheer mercy.
For what we have received from the God of Israel
Was not even an obvious gift
For the children of Israel themselves.
We are here by invitation only-
No one’s earned their spot.
It is an illusion
To think that God sees our good deeds
As qualifiers for His blessing,
Or that our stumbling has disqualified us from it-
We are His not because we have desired to be
But because He has
Made it so.
“For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.”
Romans 9:15-16 NIV
