Forgiven

The promise of Easter
Is that God really did
Let it all go.
More than was reasonable
More than was fair.
Christ is in the business
Of making lovers out of enemies,
He does not wield
Our faults against us
To keep us in line,
He firmly places our offence
In an irretrievable place
Far beyond the reach
Of our doubts
Or our tendency to fall.
We are forgiven:
A gift that can only be lost
By outright rejection of it.
It is the salve our wounds have
Always needed
The hope our feet roam the earth
In search of,
The greatest opportunity
For true liberation
From the horrors of the past.

Healed and forgiven, look where my chains are now
