On putting our knives away

When things get heated
And conversations grow horns,
Our hearts respond in turn
By coming dressed for the occasion
Bearing knives.
Knives that are too easy to pick up
And too hard to put down-
Lacerations of the tongue
Targeted jabs of the reply
And the ever-threatening knife to the throat
Of a sharp tone of voice.
Its unfortunate that long after
The final word has been spoken
These knives remain unsheathed
As we cut ourselves
As much as we cut others
Leaving all our blood
On each other’s hands.
Blessed are those
Who know when to put their knives away.

Be angry and do not sin
-Ephesians 4:26
