Asking for a friend

We do our best work
On behalf of others.
The kinds of questions we ask
And answers we seek
Are different
Because being of service
Uses a muscle superior
To being a brand.
Asking for a friend
Is not about hiding our own questions
By posing them as someone else’s
But its a posture of deep empathy
Born out of a desire for kinship-
For light to be shed on darkness
For the burdens of others to be lifted
By searching earnestly for answers
To the questions that your friend
May not have the courage or vocabulary
To ask.
Asking questions with as much curiosity
And care
As though they were your own.
