Foreign to your family

The world can clap for you
Give you accolades
Claim you as their own
Shower you with trophies
Fill up stadiums in your honor
Read your blogs
Quote your content
Hang on your every word –
But if it all serves to
Cut you off from your roots
Then it may not be worth it.
Few things are more disorienting
Than becoming a foreigner
To your own family,
Being so swept up
In what you’ve made of yourself,
Behaving as though
You have raised yourself.
No matter where you go in this life
You will always come from somewhere
And you would do well
Not to forget it.
