The Lie of the Sacred Object

The little voice says
Somewhere in a mall,
A car dealership
Or real estate catalogue
Lies the thing
Your heart has been longing for.
Somewhere out there
In the arms of a lover
Or the companionship of a friend
Is the total acceptance you crave.
Nay friend,
You won’t find it encoded
In another stamp on your passport,
And when your excursion in nature
Comes to an end
Your longing for peace
Will go on.
What we seek is not a Sacred Object
For we would have found it by now.
We seek not a thing
But a Person.

You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You
-St Augustine
