Substitutes for honesty

Are glaringly inadequate.
Forced relationships
Born out of neediness;
Enormous family rifts
That grow with every passing year of noisy conversations that reek of the unspoken conversations underneath;
Entire careers
Built on the back of proving a point.
When we fail to be honest
We benefit our delusions
At the expense of who we really are.
Here we are no longer real people
With real hopes and limitations,
Just the facades we show up with,
Mere holograms of who we wish we were
But not honest enough to actually be.
