There is a sketchy kind of humility
That stems from a having a need to be a hero.
A sense of obligation to suffer for others
Even when it is not called for,
Perhaps even feeling guilty
For having good fortune.
Being concerned about the less fortunate
Is a wonderful virtue
But a terrible way to cover up
False humility.
Acts of service done for those in need
Are always done best
By those whose minds are focused
on the well-being of the ones they seek to serve
And not on how those acts of service
Will make us feel about ourselves.
