Scar tissue

Its what our bodies form
In response to trauma,
Laying down new tissues
Where damage has been done
Creating alternate pathways
Just to keep things moving.
But the thing about scar tissue
Is that its not like
That which was there before
Its not as elastic
Not as smooth
Not as free.
And so it is with trauma
To our souls
Where we inhabit new
Emotional pathways
To avoid the paths of previous pain;
Defensiveness
An unquenchable need for control
Independence at all costs
A persistent need for approval
Unwavering self-righteousness
An ability to find the role of the victim
No matter the circumstance.
There are ways of being human that
We have learned
Because we felt we had no other way.
And while that served a purpose
We are now grappling with
Scar tissue on our souls
It too, is not like
That which was there before
Its not as elastic
Not as smooth
Not as free.
