A Hand to hold on earth’s darkest day

Is what He has promised.
Not that the darkness will not come
Nor that we will not feel it
Nor that we will always
See ourselves as separate from it,
But that on that day
He will be there-
Enormous, ferocious power
Gentled just to be with us in our distress.
For the darkness
Is not a sign of the absence
Of God’s goodness,
Or His failure to handle business,
But an opportunity for us to see Him in suffering,
And how He too has known great darkness,
How He too once prayed desperate prayers in the night.
Indeed He is not a figment of our imagination,
For we would never invent a God
Who fashioned life itself with His hands,
Hands that would also humble themselves
To be nailed crimson to a tree.
We will see dark days.
And He will be there for each and every one.

For this is what the high and exalted One says— He who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite
-Isaiah 57:15

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
-John 16:33
