Resonating with others

Is not a given.
Sometimes you’re just saying
What needs to be said,
But no one’s ready to hear it.
Other times you’re speaking up
Thinking you are doing it for others
But you’re really setting yourself free.
And other times you just have a tough crowd
And they are not the kind of people
With an ear for what you have to say.
Not all your words will mean much to others,
And it would be a mistake to demand
That each of them do.
Sometimes you have no audience to speak of,
Only a lonely mountain
Where you can carefully lay down your words
Along the trail
Perhaps for a weary traveler
Who might stumble across them
And find them useful.
