Pre-disqualification

Before I sit down to write
There’s often a scuffle within my members
Between my will to create
And an urgent, persistent and seemingly authoritative voice
That earnestly encourages me to disqualify myself
For my own good
Long before the work has even started.
It lists good reasons for not showing up
IN ALL CAPS.
Making much of previous
False starts
And missed opportunities,
It adds up to a series of
Self-fulfilling prophecies
About why I’m going to mess this up.
Long before my name is even in the hat
I would’ve already erased it from the ledger.
There’s no greater disqualification
Than the one you do to yourself
Unprovoked.

Don’t over think it
Do the work.
